Darkness swallowed the land. Any stars that might've shone in the sky were covered by thick, dark clouds. The only sounds that could be heard cutting through the pitch blackness were crickets and the clattering of branches in the wind. Leaf-bare still had a sharp hold on life, and a sheet of fresh frost blanketed the grass.
A torbie she-cat and her brother padded along, caught between a thick treeline and a Thunderpath. The occasional monster growled as it charged by, filling the air with clouds of poisonous fog. Every time a monster passed, the twins held their breath for as long as they could manage. The torbie's cream-and-white brother began to lag behind, his pawsteps slowing. The ground rumbled as a monster passed them.
"Stop, Splash. How much longer until we find this 'mysterious lake' that you saw in your dreams?" He said after the cloud of smoke had disipated. "I'm sick of having to hold my breath whenever a monster comes up behind us."
Splash only slowed momentarily, her nubby tail twitching. "Soon, I hope." She opened her maw to take in any scents she could, but all she could taste was the unpleasant stink of the Thunderpath and its inhabitants. "I can't smell anything here, Flame." Splash pouted before climbing under the shiny barrier that separated the Thunderpath from the forest. "Let's go deeper into the forest and try again."
Flame rolled his eyes. "I think you're just getting us more lost." He said.
"I'm not!" Splash replied. "In that dream, I saw this exact Thunderpath! There were starry pawprints along that way..." She retraced her steps back a little bit, squeezing her eyes shut as she tried to remember her dreams. Suddenly, her eyes flew open and she bounded into the woods. "Follow me! I know where to go!"
"Wait up!" Flame shouted as he chased after her. "You don't know if there's foxes or coyotes in there!"
Splash hurdled through thorny vines and leaf litter. Her breath streamed from her mouth like a mini cloud. As she ran along, she could feel something budding in her chest, like her heart was going to burst. She felt like she could still see the starry pawprints in front of her as she ran.
Finally, Splash burst out of the treeline and into another clearing. Flame followed after her. Her eyes widened at the sight in front of her. It was the same lake as the one in her dreams! It was jet black in the darkness, like a massive, yawning chasm. Dirt turned to mud turned to small pebbles as land met water. The shiny eyes of an unknown predator flashed in the distance before disappearing into the underbrush, never to be seen again. Splash padded up to the water, dipping down to take a drink.
"So, this is it? This is our new home?" Flame meowed as he padded up behind Splash, his ear flicking.
As Splash pulled away from the water, she noticed the clouds clearing in the sky reflected beneath her. There, she saw a cluster of stars, shimmering brightly. "This is it. This is our new home."
